The intervention in Vergílio Ferreira Secondary School focused on the renovation and reorganisation of the existing buildings and adding a new entrance building that also houses the school administration spaces and is linked to the buildings housing the library, the teachers’ spaces and spaces for attending to parents and guardians.
The spaces reserved for pupils and the classrooms are distributed throughout the various buildings. One of the buildings was given an extension so that the dedicated spaces for the arts and experimental sciences could meet the modern-days standards. The sports facilities and respective support spaces were likewise remodelled.
The links between the various buildings take the form of light metal structure elements clad with gold-coloured aluminium profiles. The convergence of these elements in the entrance block responds to present-day accessibility needs and also creates a strong relationship between the interior and exterior spaces. The linking of these elements around what remains of a fountain next to the entrance building creates an environment that highlights the importance of the centrality of the surrounding spaces.
