The intervention in Dona Maria II Secondary School was characterised by the extension of the built surface area to more than double the original space, with the layout of the new buildings defining three interior patios.
A new entrance was created at the heart of the school leading directly to the library and learning street (which includes informal indoors areas) and ending in the social spaces including the canteen/snack bar and pupils’ socialising and study space. Next to the entrance is the school administration/management area
The two classroom blocks run parallel to each other. Between them are other blocks dedicated to specific activities: the laboratories, arts workshops and sports spaces – gym and covered playing field. Next to the latter are also the sports support spaces and open-air playing fields. The old gym was renovated to turn it into a multipurpose facility
The old school management building was converted into a space for exclusive use by teachers to support their work and for relaxation.
The school grounds were redesigned to provide better accessibility, increase the covered recreation area and permeable and tree-covered areas, and regulate parking.
