The D. João de Castro School building in the parish of Alcântara in the west of Lisbon was opened in 1949 under the name Liceu D. João de Castro.
The design project, by architect José Costa e Silva, was developed in 1945 for the JCETS-MOPS.
With its national grammar school programme and capacity for 900 students, it was built as one single three-storey building consisting of 5 interconnected volumes arranged in a U shape. In the late 1970s a gym/sports pavilion was added.
The modernisation operation for the Dom João de Castro school was aimed at adapting the existing structure to a new functional programme. In addition to integrating the Fonseca Benevides Secondary School, which transferred from its former premises in Alcântara, the school is also used by the Electronics Industry Vocational Training Centre (CINEL), which shares the classrooms, laboratories and other spaces. Thus, the building unites both secondary education and training courses for the electricity and electronics industries.
The intervention sought to maintain the identity of the original building while complementing it. To this end, the existing edifice was linked to a new structure defined by a system of buildings juxtaposed to the original one.
To the north of the school’s main building is a new three-storey volume that houses the laboratory and workshop spaces (electronics, electro-mechanics, information technologies, micro-welding, circuit electronics, domotics and renewable energies) and respective support spaces and offices. The circulation space was amplified to serve the two bodies, resulting in the emergence of a central space with triple ceiling height topped by a row of clerestory windows.
The new body creates a new transparent and translucid front facing north and defining the main public entrance, extended by cul-de-sac space in which Rua Jau ends.
This entrance takes on the character of an elevated square, given its dimensions and development and the fact that it connects the street and the building, which are on two different levels.
The pre-existing difference in level between Level 2 and the square now houses the new canteen/cafeteria spaces and the social areas.
An indoor sports hall was added to the old gymnasium, making it possible for it to be used by the local community.
