The intervention in Francisco de Holanda Secondary School in Guimarães was characterised by the remodelling of the existing facilities in terms of reorganisation of the interior space, upgrading of interior floor and wall coverings and repair and maintenance of the structural conditions.
The formal identity of the main school block was preserved, while the workshop area was absorbed by the building that resulted from the addition of two new lateral volumes housing new classrooms.
Under the wing of the new building facing the street from which the school is accessed, is the spacious canteen/social room/multipurpose area that has easy access to the large triangular patio that constitutes the centre of the school’s exterior recreation space.
In order to avoid the visual impact of having a roof over the games field, the land was lowered, thus meaning that the volume is duly framed by the high walls that demarcate the school grounds.
The intervention project also included a remodelling of the school grounds.
